Reflective Surfacing and Synthetic Turf

Since the inception of PE Fibers used in landscaping applications there have been random instances of fiber shrinkage and melting due to reflective issues. With the increased usage of higher energy efficient windows and doors we have seen these instances increase. These windows and doors are efficient by reflecting more of the suns energy, which in turn increase the amount of the suns energy absorbed by the turf.
We would like to make all parties involved aware of a few things to look for and what steps you can take to remedy reflective surfaces to avoid shrinkage and melting issues. The situation that we have seen causing the most issues is Low-E windows and doors facing the south as they will have the Sun’s energy reflected from them most of the day with the highest reflectivity being around noon.
We recommend if an installation fits the criteria of Low-E glass and Southern exposure these steps should be taken:
1) Visit the site between 11:00 am and 1:00 pm to s
ee where the reflected energy is focused (this could be from either the 1st or 2nd story).
2) Devise a plan that could include screens for the glass, planting evergreens between the reflective surface and the turf, or build rock gardens in the affected area.

These steps should help avoid and future issues.

Please note Low E Glass isn’t the only source of reflective surfacing that can create melting in Synthetic Turf. Reflective Melting can occur from various surfaces including but not limited to Patio Furniture, Flag Poles, Plastic Toys, and Metal Outbuildings. Please make the customer aware of these possibilities.
Please follow up with your Account Manager if you have any further questions before starting your next project. You can also refer back to your installation guidelines for complete details.

Sporturf Joins Forces with MASL Utica

Soccer is the most popular sport in the world and Sporturf takes that fact very seriously. So much so that the Major Arena Soccer League decided to collaborate with Sporturf to outfit their turf fields with Sporturf synthetic turf.  In 2018, Sporturf and Sporturf International provided the turf for the Major League Arena Soccer team the Utica Comets!

The Comets chose to outfit their field in a striking blue turf that was designed for their unique needs as a Major Arena Soccer League.

When asked about how well the field performs and the benefits Bo Jelovac, UCFC Captain had this to say, “The color of the turf is great. Having a unique playing surface reminds visiting players that this is our home field. The panels lay very flat allowing for no breaks in play due to surface.”

U.S. Customs and Border Protection Investigating Synthetic Turf Importers Who Evade Tariffs

FOREST HILL, Md.Dec. 4, 2018 /PRNewswire/ — The Synthetic Turf Council (STC) has learned that U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) is investigating U.S. importers of synthetic turf that may be willfully evading tariffs placed on synthetic or artificial turf.

Based on publicly available information, the STC and industry participants have filed hundreds of e-Allegation violations that question whether the synthetic turf that is being imported into the U.S. is properly coded and subject to tariffs. CBP is using this data and other information in order to conduct its investigation.

According to CBP, e-Allegations provide a means for the public to report to CBP any suspected violations of trade laws or regulations related to the importation of goods into the U.S. These types of violations include misclassification of merchandise, false country of origin markings, health and safety issues, valuation issues and intellectual property rights.

The STC has also learned that as new tariffs on synthetic turf have been put in place, shipping companies have accelerated their marketing efforts by offering to relabel containers through intermediate destinations (called ‘transshipping’) to hide the true country of origin. This involves taking a shipment for a fee from a country that has a tariff in place, unloading it in a country that does not, repacking and shipping the container to the U.S. The result obfuscates the country of origin and determination of tariffs.
