Worldwide Installs Fielder’s Choice at Durham College

Recently longtime Sporturf dealer Worldwide Turf installed popular Sporturf product Fielder’s Choice at Durham College’s women’s softball facility. The Worldwide team provided design and build services for Durham College’s brand new baseball facility. Construction began in March 2020 and the surface is 100% Sporturf synthetic turf. This state-of-the-art facility features many completely customized components. This project started with the removal of the existing natural grass diamond, followed by the construction of a dynamic aggregate base and installation of a performance pad, synthetic turf with custom lines, Durham Lord’s logos, rubber infill, double batting cages with netting, bullpens and custom dugouts.

The facility includes a customized scoreboard, flag poles, and LED field lighting (also included in the bullpens and dugouts). The field is equipped with an award-winning pole-to-pole tension netting, with an integrated and customized backstop wall pad system, windscreens. The 400 seat custom bleachers include VIP seating for 100 and an integrated press box and perimeter fencing.

The Ultra Cross® knotless low-profile net barriers are Dyneema® fiber construction, which makes it exceptionally strong, providing spectators industry-leading 95% see-through visibility, which is why it’s the preferred netting of Major League Baseball venues.

Why You Should Choose Synthetic Turf for Your Football Field

Editor’s Note:  This post was originally published in October 2018 and has been updated for accuracy and comprehensiveness.

According to the Synthetic Turf Council, in the United States alone, there are over 5,500 synthetic turf fields in current use. Millions of students across the country have the opportunity to practice and play on a sports field that is functional rain or shine. Football turf is popping up all over the country.

Synthetic Football Turf Pros

  • Lower maintenance costs. While we can’t say the initial cost will be cheaper, it will be in the hundreds of thousands, the upkeep is much less costly. Your typical natural turf sports field can use up to a million gallons water each year, with synthetic turf water is not needed. Add to it, that synthetic turf needs no mowing or trimming nor traditional grooming.
  • Chemical/pesticide-free. Dissimilar to natural grass, synthetic turf does not require pesticide treatment nor fertilizers.
  • Extended play. Synthetic turf fields are so much more durable than natural grass fields. Natural grass is more susceptible to weather, animals, wear and tear from players and a multitude of other components. With a synthetic field, you don’t have to worry about a flooding field or muddy play space.
  • ADA compliant. Many fields are required to be ADA compliant. With turf this is easier to accomplish that it could be with natural turf.
  • Logo Customization. Synthetic turf allows for logo customization that is durable and more vibrant than a painted field. The logos can’t be worn away.

Synthetic Football Turf Cons

  • It can and will be a costly investment and for some that may be a mitigating factor.
  • Temperature and heat. Synthetic turf can and will heat up in the sun but as technology continues improving the heat can be managed with infill and light water spray if needed.

As always if you have any questions or concerns before your next project please reach out to your regional account manager or give us a call and we can help you out!

San Diego State University Chooses Sporturf

Designer: David DiGeronimo with DMA Sports Group

Architect: Swinerton

Contractor: AFE Sports

Product: FL510T-95

Note: a 95 oz 1 3/4” pile slit film with a nylon thatch.

Infill: Zeofill

Field: Multi-use-soccer, lacrosse, and rugby

When asked about the install David DiGeronimo of DMA Sports Group had this to say, “Sporturf supplied the Los Angeles Recreation and Parks specification flawlessly for the SDSU Project. Sporturf was selected based on its reputation as a leader in manufacturing turf.  Key points taken away in working with the SportsTurf team were it was easy, great communication and open to the specification that the Owner wanted produced, which is not easy.  Our firm (DMA) visited the plant and reviewed the manufacturing process, which exceed all expectations with the cleanliness, quality control process and worker safety utilized in the manufacturing plant. The project was built in conjunction with AFE Sports, Brock Pad YSR and Zeolite Infill.  The field has played extremely well since August and with 95 oz of yarn it’s holding up extremely well to the high usage of the college community.  Thank you Sporturf team on a well produced product and openness to fit our clients needs with no hassle’s!”

SDSU’s field is a multipurpose field home to multiple sports including soccer, lacrosse and rugby. The Aztec Recreation department provides high quality programs, services and facilities that inspire active, healthy living and enhance the SDSU experience which is one of the main reasons they chose Sporturf. The Recreation Field features state-of-the art turf and lighting systems. The new turf technology provides lowered field temperatures and maximum shock reduction for participants. This Green built space also utilizes highly focused LED lighting that minimizes shadows and power consumption. Located north of SDSU Parking Structure 12, the Recreation Field is available daily for drop-in play and also hosts recreational activities, including Aztec Recreation Group Fitness classes, ENS Credit classes, Intramural Sports and Sport Clubs.

About Swinerton

Swinerton traces its roots back to 1888, when a young Swedish immigrant formed a brick masonry and contracting business in Los Angeles to serve the growing city in its post–Gold Rush building boom.

Since our earliest days building along the Western frontier, the company has survived and thrived through two world wars, the Great Depression and Recession, dynamic cultural movements, and natural disasters. Since Swinerton’s earliest days, our exceptional craftsmanship has helped us create celebrated landmark projects throughout the West and beyond.

The company now has over 3,500 employees from coast to coast, and along the way we’ve helped build communities from the peaks of the Rocky Mountains to the Hawaiian Islands, from the Gulf of Alaska to the jungles of Colombia. The company still operates under California contractor’s license number 92—the one it obtained in 1927 when the state first began issuing licenses. Many Swinerton-built structures now claim a spot on the National Register of Historic Places and other architectural preservation lists.

Do You Know About G-Max?

G-Max is important to consider when installing an athletic surface for athletes.

A field’s level of shock absorbency is tested by using a unit of measurement called the g-max, where one “g” represents a single unit of gravity. The peak acceleration reached upon impact of two objects, such a football player and the synthetic turf surface, is the maximum number of g’s a field is able to absorb.

A field with a higher g-max level loses its ability to absorb the force — and places more impact on the athlete during a collision, while a surface with a lower g-max absorbs more force, lessening the impact to the athlete. Using ASTM F1936 test method, g-max readings shall not exceed 200 at each test point. With proper maintenance, a synthetic turf field should have a g-max of well below 200. The g-max guideline in the STC’s Guidelines for Synthetic Turf Performance is “below 165” for the life of the synthetic turf field.
